vaccinated for h1n1 but now showing symptoms?
My child was given the H1N1 shot on Friday. It is now Sunday and he is running a 102 fever, body aches, and horrible cough. Is is possible to catch swine flu even after being vaccinated? How long does it take for the vaccine to become effective? Is there a window of time before you are protected that you could catch the virus?
No auctions available.
Some people actually get the symptoms after receiving the vaccine. However, the vaccine consists of a dead strain of the virus. So it is technically impossible to get the virus from the vaccine. As to the time range, I cannot say. Due to the fact that he is a child however, I would recommend taking him to the doctor or urgent care as soon as possible to get checked. Cannot be to safe with them right?
The purpose of a vaccination is so the immune system can build up antibodies to fight the infection from the virus. Vaccinations do not prevent illness, only lessen the severity. Call the pediatrician.
Yes, it is possible that he was exposed to the flu before getting the shot, and that he got the shot during the window of time that the virus was incubating in his system.
Fever is sometimes a side effect of the vaccine, but I would not have expected it to be that high. He could also have some other illness.
Also unfortunately, it *is* possible to catch the flu after being vaccinated. The vaccine provides a much greater chance that a person will not catch it, but the chance is sadly not 100%. It’s better odds than not being vaccinated, but it sadly is not perfect.
Hope he feels well soon!
I, honestly, do not understand completely the effects of vaccinations. I know that what we are given is the deadened virus. But it seems to me that our body would not be able to discern whether it is dead or alive. I would think that our body would attempt to fight it off, whether dead or alive, and to do that needs to use symptoms. A runny nose to let the virus escape the body, a fever to burn the virus out of the body, etc. I’m not sure why, with vaccinations, we do not tend to show symptoms.
I am sorry I did not answer your question. I am confused on the matter.
The vaccination may cause fever, joint aches, head aches, etc. I personally achieved a fever of 101 for two days after the vac. These symptoms should subside within 24 hours.
The vaccine will not be 100% effective for up to 21 days after the shot.
It is possible to catch the virus in the interim.
After the vaccine, your child will be protected from the H1N1 strain of flu. He may catch other viral infections and flu viruses.
Give him over the counter medication to combat his pain and temperature for today and tomorrow. If he has any difficultly in breathing or persistent vomiting/diarrhoea, seek immediate medical intervention.
