There’s also some conflict regarding the daily maximum level of exposure for methylmercury (yes I know that’s not exactly the same as ethylmercury) according to the EPA and the amount that is contained in the vials of flu vaccine that contain Thimerosal. The allowable daily limit for mercury is no more than . 1 microgram per kilogram of body weight. A young child typically needs 2 vials (one monovalent H1N1 and one trivalent seasonal vaccines) each at . 5 milliliters. A . 5 milliliter vial contains 25 micrograms of mercury compound. That means total intake of ethylmercury will be 25 micrograms. If you do the math you can easily see that a 40 pound 5 year old girl is getting a much higher amount of mercury than the EPA guideline suggests is allowable. If the vaccine was a piece of fish the EPA guideline would be far worse. I’m currently researching more specifics on ethylmercury, but this info is hard to find, not always clear, and certainly not conclusive. All doctors don’t agree that the vaccines are “safe. ” (Kent Holtorf is one who says it may not be. )

I know what I’m linking to below is a lot to read, but really it’s not as simple as many people suggest when they say the vaccine is “safe” and that there’s no kind of widespread campaign to get as many people vaccinated as possible with something they may not need:

There is no evidence that thimerosal (a mercury preservative in vaccine that comes in multi-dose vials) is harmful to a pregnant woman or a fetus. However, because some women are concerned about thimerosal during pregnancy, vaccine companies are making preservative-free seasonal flu vaccine and 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine in single dose syringes for pregnant women and small children. CDC advises pregnant women to get flu shots either with or without thimerosal.

I’ve said it in another post and I’ll say it again; the vaccine is not a scam and it’s not unsafe. If you believe these sorts of things are conspiracies, chances are evidence to the contrary is not going to help.

EDIT: Look, I’m not out on the warpath to get people to start inoculating themselves. Whether or not you get any immunization is your decision. But for years, doctors have been combating a culture of misinformation and fear regarding vaccines. Has this flu been blown out of proportion by the media? Absolutely. Will you be fine if you choose not to get immunized? Almost certainly.

That being said, there’s an undercurrent to a lot of this that boils down to a basic mistrust of the government and its agencies when it comes to overseeing this vaccine. The idea that this vaccine is being forced upon us is a little disingenuous. Very few people are being forced to get this vaccine and if there’s pressure from the CDC it’s probably because they always pressure us to remain disease free. Around winter, nobody is accusing the CDC of being in the pocket of “big hand-soap” when they constantly urge us to wash our hands.

I believe, and this may differ fundamentally from the interpretation of others, that the CDC and FDA are moving to make this vaccine available because of the potential threat this disease poses if left unabated. I don’t know if it’s 100% of their motivation, but I genuinely believe that’s the long and the short of it.

I am going to get the vaccine because I don’t want to be sick with the disease. I will take the risk of headache, injection site rash and other side effects over this illness. I don’t think I will ever experience anything more menacing than those symptoms and I also don’t think that without the vaccine I will be in serious danger. That’s my decision, and I don’t think anyone else should make that decision unless they feel the way I do.

My point is that alarmists on both sides are probably getting a little too worked up over another vaccine.

Second of all the swine flu vaccine is worse. Shot’s contain a “dead” virus. The swine flu vaccine contains a mixture of the live virus.
